SKY DOOR

SELF-CATERING HAY LOFT & GEISHA GARDEN

For the creatives ... the nature lovers ... the romantics.

Sky Door is an enchanting hideaway for two. Hidden down a track in the side of a valley in rural West Wales, its a place full of foxgloves, ferns and circling red kites, with views so abundant you can study ornithology and absurd cow maneuvers from your bed. The muralled interior is inspired by the mystical local Welsh landscape and its plethora of wildlife. Outside, influences are a little further flung, with a giant geisha presiding over the adjoining fully enclosed slate water garden, and beside that, an additional raised garden with mini yurt and fire spot, just ripe for some dark sky stargazing.

INSPIRINGLY UNIQUE

Sky Door has been designed to be more than just a place to sleep after you've been to the beach. Every square inch has been creatively considered and everything in it handcrafted, to create spaces that are charming, relaxing and (we hope) inspiring. We used to live in a busier place, with a busier life and regularly sought solace in Wales - not to join the hordes in the tourist hot spots but to stop a while in nature and take stock and then perhaps spend some time seeking out the special and the secret places. In effect, Sky Door is the place we were always looking for in the hope that it will attract like-minded people.

ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPECTFUL

The barn has been renovated over a two year period by our own fair hands. We have used traditional building methods and almost entirely reclaimed goods and materials. From the timber in the french windows and the juliet balconies, to the king-size pew bed, kitchen and furnishings - everything is reclaimed, reimagined or recrafted, while never compromising the building's historic value which we have worked relentlessly to rediscover and preserve. There is also no gas or oil here. Heating is via electric radiator and wood burner, and hot water is provided by a solar thermodynamic system.

LIBERATINGLY INCONVENIENT

Sky Door is attached to our farmhouse whose beguiling facade hides a multitude of historic building sins and so, at present, we live in a caravan on the land. That means there is nobody living directly next door or beneath you and we leave you to your own devices unless you bring wine, in which case, we'll build a fire. The property is reached via a 1/3 mile private track which descends from a quiet lane. Other than the odd tractor, there is no ambient traffic noise, no light pollution, and no immediate neighbours. There is also no broadband, lower quality mobile reception, and a round trip to the local shop takes half an hour so it's for people who understand the utter liberation the situation offers.

REFRESHINGLY BORING

There is nothing here but nature. Entertainment is provided by daily red kite and raven tussels, a multitude of bird species, leaping foxes, neighbouring four-legged farm animals of all varieties, the sound of running water and some incredible dark sky stargazing. There are a selection of books and games in Sky Door or you can spend time in the water garden, cooking outside, or up at the fire spot where the very best views are. There are some stunning walks to be had locally but, if you do want to explore further afield, the Preselis are within minutes, the nearest beach is a 20 minute drive and our central location means that a 30 minute journey in any direction will deliver you to some of the finest coastline, ancient woodland and waterfalls on offer across three counties - Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion. We may also share our treasure map of 'special places' but you'll be sworn to secrecy.
