FURNITURE MAKING
Col is a multi-skilled craftsman but above all else, his skills lie in high quality joinery. He has honed his craft over many years, working on some fine historic houses, where attention to period detail is paramount. Typically, his customer relationships begin with doors and windows but many of them rapidly move into bespoke furniture. Below is a small selection of a significantly larger portfolio which he can produce if required.
RETRO STYLE MEDIA CABINET, REDLAND, BRISTOL
A commission for a freestanding retro style media cabinet in Redland, Bristol. Constructed from veneered ash MDF on hand turned solid ash dansette legs. Incorporating a traditionally made dovetail jointed drawer and soft close mechanisms on all doors and drawers. A spray white finish was used externally and spray clear lacquer internally.
EXTENDABLE ELM DINING TABLE
This table was for a longstanding customer who wanted a minimalist design that didn't take up too much space but would extend when required. We looked at a range of more unusual British timbers and chose elm. Such simple design requires real joinery precision. There was also significant focus on ease of functionality. A table that allowed space for the kids to play but that, even they, could extend safely.
COFFEE TABLE, BATH
A commission for a large coffee table for a barn conversion in Bath. The client had an old shower screen from a bathroom renovation to be used as the surface. The base was designed to incorporate traditional pegged mortise and tenon joints. It was made from 100+ year old reclaimed solid oak from a flour mill. The table top rested on decorative recessed wine corks to stop it slipping so sourcing the materials was fun. The close up shot is of Col's makers mark.
CHILD'S OAK STORY-TELLING CHAIR, CORK, IRELAND
Col's first ever furniture commission. It was a christening gift, given as a story-telling chair to the client's niece in Ireland. A contemporary approach to design but a traditional approach to joinery. Fittingly, it was made using solid oak from Ireland and finished in hard wax.
LIBRARY WALL, CLIFTON, BRISTOL
Design, build and finishing of a traditional fitted library wall with storage cupboards in a listed building in Clifton, Bristol. The design included period details. Materials used were tulip wood and MDF with solid oak surfaces. The project had a hand painted finish.
HIDDEN OFFICE IN A WARDROBE, ESHER, SURREY
This recessed hidden office was made to match other wardrobes in a period property in Esher, Surrey. The pocket doors opened out and slid into the recess to create open access to the pull out desk. Lighting and power were also incorporated as well as a secret valuables drawer. Constructed from veneered oak on MDF with solid oak details.
MEMORIAL BENCH, CHEW MAGNA, SOMERSET
A recommendation delivered this commission for a memorial bench. The only provisos were that it should be made from some old oak he already had, be traditionally joined, with no fixings and hand carved. The bench was in memory of his much loved dog that had recently passed away and is situated in her favorite spot in the garden.
